Hotel expands to beat recession

John Wigfield outside the hotel

John Wigfield, director at Cubley Hall hotel, Penistone, says it is vital to spend on improved facilities and marketing.
The hotel, which John has run with business partner David Slade for 31 years, said: “It is a false economy to cut spending or to just stay stuck in a rut.
“We have decided to move more into business tourism and have spent money on new equipment and new branding and we are optimistic about the future.”
He has recently taken on a new chef and two other new members of staff to add to the 70-strong team.
The hotel has been given free advice from business support programme Enterprising Barnsley.
Adrian Waite, of Enterprising Barnsley, said: “Over the next four years £20 million is being invested in the Barnsley visitor economy in a variety of public and private sector projects, including Experience Barnsley and Cannon Hall Farm.
“Every pound invested in tourism in Yorkshire delivers £40 into the Yorkshire economy, making it worth £7billion a year.”

Firms set to move into Gateway project

The rear view of the development

Several local businesses have agreed to move into the new Penistone Gateway development, due to be completed this autumn, are high, according to developers Dransfield Properties
Managing Director Mark Dransfield said: “We’ve had a good deal of interest from companies keen to move or relocate into Penistone – which is great news for the local economy and shows the confidence that exists in the area.”
The transformation of the site, which fronts St Mary’s Street, is the final piece of the jigsaw of the town centre development by Dransfield, working in partnership with Barnsley Council.
It is the final phase of Penistone’s town centre regeneration scheme and offers six commercial units and 21 offices aimed at start-up businesses. Up to 80 jobs could be created.
Coun Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, will mark the start of the work at soil cutting ceremony at 1pm on Tuesday May 28.
The earlier phases of the £15m town centre regeneration scheme included a new Tesco foodstore and town centre car park as well as an award winning oak built market hall. The town’s fire and ambulance stations were also relocated in 2009 to new purpose built premises at Springvale in Penistone.
Mr Dransfield said: “There has been a great deal of support for this final phase of the development. The scheme has been designed to fit in with the street scene and also with the new markets areas so it really will bring something new and enhance this part of the town.”
The company has attracted £1.2 million of investment from the European Union.

Woodchip plant brings 20 jobs

plevin-logo

The UK’s largest waste wood recycling centre is to be built at Hazlehead, creating 20 jobs and processing 150,000 tonnes of waste wood a year.
Plevin, a family-run company based in the Manchester area, plans a £5 million facility on the 50 acre site, formerly part of the Wavin operation at Crow Edge.
The plant will primarily manufacture recycled wood chips for a £120m renewable energy plant at Blackburn Meadows near Sheffield. Plevin will be the exclusive suppliers of fuel for the biomass-fired facility.
Jamie Plevin, managing director of Plevin, said: “The Hazlehead facility will be a fantastic development for us.
“Once completed, we will be able to offer guaranteed recycling of a large volume of high and low grade waste wood.”
Work on the site is due to be completed next spring.
As well as processing biomass fuel, Plevin manufactures a range of market-leading wood-based products, including materials for the panel board industry and animal bedding for livestock, equestrian and small animals.
Business development manager Andrew McFadzean, who has recently been recruited by Plevin, said “Hazlehead is an excellent site. No other wood recycling company has ever had a facility like it.”

Poor public transport makes for ‘impossible’ task for job hunters

photoAn influential watchdog says job prospects for young people and the long-term unemployed around Penistone are being harmed by poor public transport.

Barnsley Council’s Economy and Skills Scrutiny Commission describes how transport problems are the worst in the west of the borough, which includes Penistone and surrounding villages.

While the Commission stated young people attempting to take up apprenticeship schemes face a particular challenge, it also heard that people need to have more determination and should be prepared to walk, cycle or catch more than one bus. It was also told other methods of transport should be promoted such as minibuses and taxi sharing.

The Commission will now submit recommendations to the council’s cabinet.
